DWI & Employment Background Checks

Background checks are an essential part of the hiring process in most cases and as such you should know what to expect when someone orders a background check on you. If you’ve been convicted of a DWI in the past, then this might make you feel worried or anxious. Here is what you need to know.

The first step of the process is for your employer or other entity to ask you to submit to a background check. You have the right at any time to refuse such a check if you do not wish to submit this personal information. The next step is to provide your full legal name, your social security number, and your current address. You may also be asked to submit any previous name you were called such as a maiden name if you are married or an alias that you go by.

After that the employer or other entity is going to send this information into your local government. The information will then be sent through the electronic database that is stored at your state capitol. A report will be created that will list any significant information and that will then be sent back to the person that requested the check as well as a copy sent back to you.

So what appears on a background check? For the most part this depends on what information is requested. The most standard of checks will return only criminal offenses for which you have been charged and found guilty. This is things like speeding tickets, any arrests, any warrants that may be out for your arrest, and any other criminal charges you may have faced in the recent past or are currently facing. In many cases, these charges will drop off of your record after a predetermined span of time.
